Ho, Ho, Ho and a bottle of Democracy
On Election Day, yells of joy were heard around here — but mostly on Fry Street and the UNT campus. Although many in Denton are proud to live in a Red State, they are going to ring in the New Year, Obama style. Word up.

Luckily there are some great shows to celebrate with during the holiday season. Hailey’s is hosting A Spune Christmas. This holiday extravaganza features free tacos—and some of best music around town like The Drams, Dove Hunter, Doug Burr, AM Ramblers, Telegraph Canyon, The Southern Sea and Black Harmony. Get there early for the free tacos because supplies — like George W’s days in office — are limited. Other shows of interest include Oso Closo, Snarky Puppy, Lonely, Dear, Yo Majesty and Eleanor Whitemore with Chris Masterson (of Son Volt) and Fab Deuce.

Rubber Gloves has the show of the freaking season. You cannot rightfully call yourself a Dentonite if you miss The Paper Chase with Sarah Jaffe and Boom Boom Box. If you miss this show, the Hipster Mafia will revoke your right to sport horned-rimmed glasses, skinny jeans, Converse all-stars and carry a bike messenger bag.

You can help break the glass ceiling by attending the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance benefit featuring Fire Nation, A Man Damn and Ella Minnow. Other noteworthy shows at RGRS include The Demigs and Deep Snapper.

Dan’s Silverleaf isn’t coming up short with the fine tunes, either. Your favorite Denton band, Record Hop hosts a show with Matthew and the Arrogant Sea with Florene and Kody R. Jackson… If you’ve been holding on to your last hits of orange sunshine, you’ll have a chance to tune in and drop out with Pink Floyd cover band, Bricks in the Wall.

When was the last time you impressed people on the dance floor with your wicked polka skills? Well, amigo, that is just too long. Good news: the polka kings of the tri-county area, Brave Combo will release a new CD this month. They will have a free show to celebrate over at Banter, which is just a block off ye old town square. Rock, indeed.
