Disturbed
Unleashing the weapon

“I think it’s a tribute to our fans, you know, sticking by us and at the same time hopefully we keep giving them something to get excited about,” explains Disturbed bassist John Moyer on the band’s success. Their fourth release, Indestructible, came out in June 2008 and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. This marked the third straight Disturbed album to achieve such success and they were only the sixth rock artists to do so. The band has also received their first Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance for “Inside The Fire.”

Of course the band hasn’t sold out. “We’re never gonna put out a lounge record,” Moyer says emphatically. “It’s always gonna be hard, heavy music that can inspire and give you power to do things - whether you’re an athlete or to help in whatever you do. Everybody’s got stuff that they deal with and the great thing about the music we play is that it’s the kind that people can latch onto and really get power from.”

Indestructible is a much more aggressive album, and shows the band’s evolution. David Draiman (vocals) continues to combine emotion and power with great lyrics. Dan Donegan (guitar) provides some sizzling guitar solos and rhythm work. Mike Wengren (drums) supplies a thunderous backdrop whether it’s a tribal groove or straight-ahead attack. Moyer shines throughout with walking bass line, playing along with Donegan.

After releasing Indestructible, the band hit the road with Slipknot on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. “Mayhem was like an Ozzfest-style tour but done differently with a different group of people,” recalls Moyer. “Kevin Lyman (Warped Tour) and John Reese (Taste Of Chaos) were Mayhem’s organizers, and they took a lot of their Warped Tour values of trying to create a musical community and having these planned after-show parties and mixers. It was very successful because, even though we knew the guys in Slipknot and had hung out with them before, it really encouraged all the bands to hang out and get to know each other. It made it a lot of fun.”

It was announced January 29 that Disturbed would be heading up the Music As A Weapon IV Tour, which makes a stop at Nokia on March 31. “Once again we’ll be working with John Reese who did Mayhem (Tour),” states Moyer. “He has a hand in this one but it is our tour. Music As A Weapon IV is the biggest one that we’ve done. We’re having Chimaira, Lacuna Coil and Killswitch Engage as openers, and we’re working on a second stage with more underground bands. We’re also taking along basically a tattoo convention. We’re gonna have tattoo artists traveling with us as well as using local artists. It will be more like a festival vibe for us.” Check out www.musicasaweapon4.com for more info.

So what will Disturbed have in store for those who make it out to the show? “We’re gonna bring out a lot of production,” explains Moyer. “We’ve always been a little theatrical, but we’re gonna step up those elements and take some older songs to places we never have before. You’re not just gonna see the band play the songs on stage, but we’re actually gonna try to create a real vibe with the whole thing. We’re looking forward to playing in Dallas so you better be prepared to be rocked when we get there.”
