Denton Indie — Supporting and sporting “skinny jeans” since 2009
The locally owned and operated hippie store, Voyager’s Dream, closed up their freethinking shop recently. If you want to find a store that sells Nag Champa or a copy of Be Here Now – you’ll have to look elsewhere. So, the last independently run business on Fry Street is Copy Pro Center. And the site of the former Tomato is – still – a dirt lot.

Yet, there are plenty of independent businesses in Denton that you can call for a good time. And for a good time, head over to Hailey’s this month and check out Efterkland. They’re traveling all the way from Denmark for the chance to rock you like a Danish hurricane – whatever that is.… Futurecop! — from across the pond — bounces on the scene with music from two unlikely sources of inspiration: cheesy ‘80s movies and ’80s cartoons. They’ll take the stage, with Theophilus London opening the show...

If you drink unpretentious whiskey, then you’ll want to follow the wandering tracks of Warren Jackson Hearne and the Merrie Murdre of Gloomadeers. Hearne has more soul than any Baptist church in the tri-state area. They take the stage, with The Blue Hit and John Elliot properly opening the show.

Down the street and across the railroad tracks, Rubber Gloves sticks to their off-the-cuff standards with Asobi Seksu, a female-fronted Japanese indie-pop act. They bring their critically-acclaimed selves to said venue to rock… Speaking of the Japanese, the “comic book” inspired trio, Peelander Z, return to Denton for another whacked-out set… Fans of These Arms Are Snakes take note. They grace North Texas with a show this month, with Tera Melos and Orphan kicking things off.

If you can’t make to, or afford, the annul rock and roll circus, SXSW, come check out Denton’s NX35 (North by I-35) March 12-15. The four square blocks around downtown will see more action this weekend than a Motel 6 on prom night. Most of Denton’s homegrown acts from The A.M Ramblers to Parata will be there to show you our hometown hospitality. Google the name and you’ll get the skinny. Rock, indeed.
