The Return of Chica
There is a saying around here that becomes truer by the minute: “Everyone in Denton is six months away from living in either Portland or New York.” And, about last January, René Muzquiz ( the one-woman-folk-rock-riot of Chica y Los Gatos) made the move to Oregon. But, she came back last month for a wedding, or something. While in town, she graced the makeshift stage at Art 6 with a blended set, a solo-acoustic affair and one with some Gatos. This gig was laid back to the max. She didn’t have a solid set list, but, instead, she played mostly requested songs by the curiously caffeinated crowd.

The Gatos for this show included Matt Cochran (saxophone), Brett Crow (bass) and her brother, Ramon Muzqiuz (drums). Cochran’s saxophone emphasized the unique character of Chica y Los Gatos, which is the ability to change musicians to keep the sound fresh. If you find yourself wandering around Portland, look her up and check her out. If you’re in the mood for some excellent Denton music on the softer side, stop by Art 6 on the weekends. They always book quality musicians.

Around town and such
It’s October, and that means one thing: the equinox has passed and days are getting shorter, cooler. Oh yeah, and Halloween is approaching. If the movie Mean Girls taught us one thing, it was that women have the right to dress like bachelor party strippers without fear of judgment on Halloween. I’m sure Gloria Steinem would be proud. And there are tons of great shows to celebrate this month.

Hailey’s has a candy-bucket full of sweet treats for you. Seattle’s The Dead Science take the stage with Handbrake opening. This is sure to be a great event. Say Hi, formerly known as Say Hi To Your Mom, will leave your lo-fi indie side satisfied when they hit town with Jukebox Ghosts, Gazelles and Deer and The Headlights. Fans of Dressy Bessy will be wickedly stoked. They make a stop at Hailey on their tour.

If you are in the mood for some black metal, head over the Rubber Gloves this month for Wolves in the Throneroom. Some of their masterpieces are longer than your favorite episode of The Golden Girls. This show also features the sounds and sights of Nachmystium and Lychgate. If you’ve been waiting to see Murder by Death, then your ship just sailed into the Port of Denton. They take the stage with Wil Whitmore and J. Roddy Walston and The Business.

If you’re just looking for a good time — that doesn’t require a phone number from a bathroom wall — then head over to Dan’s Silverleaf. Jimmy Webb, Paul Slavens, Wayne “The Train” Hancock and Spoonfed Tribe have shows there this month. If you need to shake what your mother gave you, check out DJ Chapa at The Boiler Room.
Rock, indeed.
