With the absence of Ozzfest from this summer’s touring schedule, Rockstar Mayhem Festival was the premier metal festival for 2009. The metal gods were with the fans, as the mid 90-degree temperature was actually cooler than the smoldering acts that cranked it out on the three stages.

The Hot Topic stage featured the ferocity of death and metalcore acts like Job For A Cowboy, Whitechapel and The Black Dahlia Murder. However it was Behemoth and Cannibal Corpse that tore through punishing sets that fired up some hellacious mosh pits

The Jagermeister stage showcased plenty of guitar shredding from the likes of All That Remains, God Forbid and Trivium. They’re definitely three of the best guitar duo bands in the metal scene.

As the festivities moved to the main stage, Bullet For My Valentine got the party going. They ripped through “Waking The Demon,” “4 Words (To Choke Upon)” and one new track as they got the crowd psyched up for the rest of the evening.

Killswitch Engage was by far the most entertaining band of the day. Hitting the stage in KSE tuxedo shirts, their performance was flawless. Howard Jones’ voice was right on with tracks like “The End Of Heartache” and “Starting Over,” while the band kicked into overdrive on “My Last Serenade,” “Rose Of Sharyn” and “Reckoning.”

As the Chants of “Slayer! Slayer! Slayer!” began, the metal kings emerged and gave the crowd a heavy dose of classics like “Hell Awaits,” “Mandatory Suicide,” “South Of Heaven” and “Angel Of Death.” Frontman Tom Araya supplied the menacing vocal lines, while thousands sang along to every word. What more can be said than F*ckin’ Slayer!
